Quake jolts Persian Gulf port city of Khamir in southern Iran

Qeshm, Hormuzgan Prov, June 3, IRNA-An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit the port city of Khamir and nearby villages in the southern province of Hormuzgan Saturday morning.

According to the seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the quake occurred at 10:45 hours local time (07:15 GMT).

The quake was also felt in Qeshm Island.

No reports have been received of any casualty or damage to property caused by the quake.

It may be recalled that on November 27, 2005 a relatively strong quake hit the Persian Gulf island of Qeshm.

At least 10 people were killed and 80 others wounded in that 5.0-magnitude quake.

The quake also destroyed villages in the island by 40 to 80 percent.

Over 3,500 residential units and shops in 24 of its villages were destroyed.

Iran is often hit by quakes of varying magnitudes as it sits on some of the world's most active seismic faultlines.

Iranians are still haunted by harrowing images of the world's worst disaster in December 2003 in which more than 31,000 people were killed in the ancient city of Bam.
